Magnesium Oxide Board (MgO)
Advanced Living Homes represents new technology to New Zealand called Magnesium Oxide (MgO) board.
Although having been used in China for as long as 100 years, it has only recently (within the last ten years) been adopted in other parts of the world. The USA accepted it as a replacement for many other technologies in 2003, including fiber-cement and gypsum internal wallboards.
What we find fascinating about the product is how resistant it is to almost anything... water, mould, fire and impact damage, to name a few.
We specify internal walls at 6mm sheets, replacing the 10mm "Gib board", "Elephant Board", British Plaster Board" or "Knauff: brands of interior wall linings available in New Zealand. While the product is higher in price per square meter than those competing products, they do not have the tough, paintable finish (essentially a Grade 5 smooth finish) of this product, and they all require additional work called "stopping", which is the plaster finish you see between sheets.
Instead, we supply a specially developed plaster which fills the small (5mm x 5mm) gap between the boards in one smooth operation. That compound is ready to sand smooth in around 30 minutes and thus saves thousands of dollars on stopping fees, as the installer of the boards can complete the task of creating a tough, stunningly smooth wall and ceiling system. Nail popping gone forever!
We also supply the product for external claddings, such as weatherboards and soffit linings, and for other inside uses such as skirting and covings
